Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
