On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Leader
The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
