Several Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Hits A Delta Airlines Plane into Sydney
A number of individuals have been injured after a Delta aircraft traveling from LA to Sydney, Australia experienced turbulence Friday morning.
Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson stated. Four flight attendants were injured.
Emergency medical services stated they treated five individuals, and transferred three to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries that such as spinal discomfort and migraines. Those affected ranged from their thirties and seventies.
It is the most recent case of planes encountering atmospheric disturbance, with researchers indicating that global warming is a key driver.
There were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the wide-body jet, the representative noted, stating that the plane landed "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on the day in question.
Paramedics indicated they got a call just a mere three minutes prior to the plane arrived, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.
The reasons turbulence is becoming more frequent - and more severe.
Last year, two dozen individuals sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "significant" rough air just two hours into the transoceanic journey, and had to make an emergency landing.
Recently, those on board on a certain international flight experienced a terrifying five seconds period of extreme instability. An individual died and many were hurt, as individuals not fastened in rose out of their seats and crashed back down.
Turbulence is not uncommon on aircraft journeys, and while occurrences of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.
Data suggests that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a total of over 35 million flights that currently occur around the world.
