Qatar Short Race and Grand Prix Qualifying: Live Coverage

Introduction

The author will be here shortly to guide you through this day's short race (14:00 GMT) and qualifying (18:00 GMT).

Real-Time Updates

Formation Lap Period

The starting lap has begun.

Track Information

There are nineteen laps around the lengthiest track in Formula One, David Croft reminds us.

Final Moments

The final countdown is underway.

Driver Situation

An advantage in Verstappen's favour: his teammate Tsunoda is ahead of him by a single position. He is unlikely to interfere with the team's main man.

Media Conversations

Sky interviewing Sky now: the analyst is at the Mercedes team.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to the 2026 season, interviewing the engineer about his promotion to the team team principal.

Grid Details

There are only sixteen vehicles on the grid. It was another bad qualifying for the driver: following his result of 20th and last in Las Vegas, leading to an eighth position in the grand prix, he failed to advance of Q1 again on Friday. Ferrari have as a result made changes to his setup and so he will start from the pit lane.

The team's Stroll and the Alpine duo of Gasly and Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Racer Statements

"We'll use the learning for the next day," says Hadjar, starting eleventh. Expect plenty of learning.

Constructors' Championship

The focus isn't solely on the individual championship: McLaren have run away with the constructors' gong but Mercedes, with a forty-point advantage over Red Bull, are aiming to secure the runner-up position this weekend. George Russell can assist in this goal from the front row, and Antonelli will start just behind the leader.

Previous Results

Oscar Piastri was victorious then – as he did the previous season, too. McLaren's Australian is attempting a third consecutive win.

Sprint Race Value

Alright, approximately twenty minutes remaining until the short race begins. Unless something goes wrong, it's greatest value is as a preview of what is to come, instead of highly important in its own right, with just eight championship points available to the winner. However, the runner-up spot here was sufficient for the driver to become champion two years ago.

Max Verstappen wins the championship following his teammate's accident of Qatar GP sprint race.
